- When former Sex Pistol STEVE JONES joined a pick up band for a benefit at LA's Viper Room in the mid '90s, he had no idea it would result in a million dollar deal with Madonna's Maverick Records. What started as a loose group of musician friends - JOHN TAYLOR (Duran Duran) and DUFF McKAGAN and MATT SORUM (Guns N' Roses) turned into NEUROTIC OUTSIDERS. Their sets of no frills, guitar-drenched, rock n’ roll tunes were mostly unheard original songs from Jones’ Sex Pistols/Professionals days. “He [Jones] gave me his songs and it became my favorite tape,” recalls McKagan. “It sounded like 1979 English punk rock with an American feel. It was rockin’. It was heavy. Jonesy wrote the coolest pop.” Their album, produced by Talking Heads’ Jerry Harrison, was originally released in 1996. New York Times called it “pure Hollywood, honestly, and comfortably vulgar." The album rocks, but there are wistfully honest tunes, including “Union,” a rumination on the demise of the Sex Pistols. “Story Of My Life” tells Jones’ addict’s tale while Taylor’s “Better Way” is “a testament to our sober lives - not the song I envisioned writing with the co-author of ‘Pretty Vacant’.” “Angelina” pays tribute to the pink-haired billboard queen of LA and “Jerk” is a humorously self-deprecating Jones’ track. There are covers of Duran Duran’s “Planet Earth” and a furious rendition of The Clash’s “Janie Jones.” Neurotics split as their other bands reformed. Long out of print, Neurotic Outsiders is re-released as an Expanded Edition, containing the full album and 4 more songs. “I am proud of that album,” says Jones. “This is one album I really do like. I like the songwriting. I like the production and I like the way it’s played. We had a fun time making that record and I think it could’ve done well if we’d all been around to give it a proper push.”
