The fan clutch mounts between the water pump pulley and the engine cooling fan blade, controlling fan engagement based on engine compartment temperature. The thermal viscous clutch uses temperature-sensitive bi-metallic coil and silicone fluid to progressively engage the cooling fan when engine temperatures rise, then disengage at lower temperatures to reduce parasitic drag and improve fuel economy. This temperature-activated design provides the optimal balance between engine cooling performance and mechanical efficiency across all driving conditions.
