What does the word, “problem” mean? Our heuristic understanding of this word makes a problem out of every “difficult situation.” Such a definition cannot work with an empirical method of problem-solving. So, the first step in problem-solving is to have an empirical understanding of what constitutes a problem. A problem is anything that poses an existential threat—a threat to your life, your vision, your purpose, your values, or something so valuable to you that you cannot live without it. Any “difficult situation” that does not pose an existential threat is a “challenge.” Problems are meant to be eliminated or contained, while challenges are meant to be managed. The tools and skills required for solving problems are different from those meant for managing challenges. While eliminating problems may require a declaration of war, managing challenges requires skills, tact, understanding, patience, and tolerance. The biggest mistake in problem-solving comes from wrongly classifying a “challenge” as a “problem.” Once this happens, the result will be conflict and bloodshed that make the situation worse. Problem-solving is both a science and a craft that cuts across several disciplines, including mathematics, information technology, psychology, anthropology, and theology. The most important task in problem-solving is identifying the primary source (the root) of the problem. Often, people mistake the branches for the root and end up wasting time and resources cutting off one or more branches, only for those branches to grow back later. This book provides an algorithm that enables you to discover the source of the problem empirically—based on available data—in a way that eliminates doubts, heuristic ramblings, and guesswork. This algorithm also guides you through the scientific process required to find a wholesome solution to the problem. As the case studies show, this algorithm will work for any problem, irrespective of magnitude, type, or scope. There are several practical case studies, based on the problem-solving algorithm in this book. Two of the most stunning case studies involve the United States of America and Nigeria. These two countries are currently facing existential threats, caused by deep division and bitterness. The uncanny thing about these two countries is that their problems are embedded in their national maxims, yet the solutions to their problems are diametrical. This book has a clear solution on what each of these countries needs to do to eliminate the threat and avoid imminent disaster. These are not prophecies. They are results from scientific analyses, based on empirical data, drawn from both the physical and spiritual universe. I started writing this book on the 16th of February 2024, and I was in the first chapter when the news of Alexei Navalny’s death in a Russian prison came in. I have chosen to dedicate this book to Alexei Navalny because he knew what constitutes a problem. Navalny had a chance to go into exile, but he refused, even though he knew the threat he faced by staying in Russia. Why? Navalny knew he had a problem to solve. Identifying that problem was not difficult for Navalny because he knew his purpose for being in the world, and he was willing to lay down his life for that purpose. To know what constitutes a problem, you must have something to live for and something to die for, otherwise, you will live for nothing and die for nothing. Navalny went back to Russia, instead of going into exile, because he had a cause to live for and to die for. Indeed, he lived and died for that cause. If you do not have something you live for, and something you are willing to die for, you will never know what poses an existential threat to you. You will end up living and dying for food, clothing, and shelter.
